I JUST NEED SOMEONE TO TELL ME HOW TALL I AM
Review: Star Telegram
By Malcolm Mayhew
Minibar is an English band that has soaked up plenty of Americana sounds. Produced by Texan T Bone Burnett, the debut from this now-Los Angeles-based group has an airy, atmospheric touch to it, much like early Cowboy Junkies stuff. But the music has more in common with Wilco and Whiskeytown, in that these are intricately twangy songs torched with honey-baked harmonies. It shouldn't come as any surprise, then, that the band covers a Whiskeytown song, "Choked Up" (which, oddly, hasn't even come out yet). But their own material is just as strong, most notably the jangly "Holiday From Myself" and the poignant "I Know Without Asking." Good stuff.
